“Top 5 Terrible Covers“ – Top 5 Wednesday

Top 5 Wednesday was created by gingerreadslainey. Check out her youtube channel! Basically, every Wednesday there is a chosen topic to which you list your top 5. If you want to join, have a look at the goodreads page!

This week’s Top 5 Wednesday topic is perfect! I don’t even know where to start. There are many beautiful covers out there but some publishing companies don’t seem to understand that, even though you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, we do. And if it is just for the first few seconds. If there are hundreds of books at my bookstore I am drawn to the pretty covers first. So dear publishing companies, a word of advice: create beautiful covers! They matter!

Now here are some books with covers that went horribly wrong:

5. The Mortal Instrument Series by Cassandra Clare

I don’t know. They are not completely horrible but I just don’t like the covers. Those shiny people in the background… I could have lived without them. The city and the colors look great but those monstrous people? I know a lot of people love the covers but I find them weird.

4. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

I am so glad this series had a cover change. The first cover of the first book was a no-go. I don’t know what the fascination is with people on covers staring off somewhere. Just what?!

3. Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

No, just no. And the saddest part? They printed the books with new covers that are just as horrible in my opinion.

2. Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

And again we have dreamy looking people on a cover. The covers in the box set are somewhat better but unfortunately incredibly boring.

1. Harry Potter by Joanne K. Rowling (German Edition)

It pains me that I have to say it, but I hated the German covers of the Harry Potter books. By now I can appreciate the artsy aspect of the drawings and quite like them but I remember how fiercely I hated the covers when I first read the books as a kid. They were just not appealing to an eleven year old girl. And considering that the books were written as children books I don’t know how anyone would think that a Harry Potter looking like that would be drawing in a child.

I am glad that I read most of these books as ebooks. That way I don’t have to look at the terrible covers on my book shelves. What about you guys? Do you like some of the covers I don’t like? What covers do you find terrible?
