The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin - Review

The Evolution of Mara Dyer - Michelle Hodkin

This book killed me – but not in a good way. The first book of the Mara Dyer series was gripping and breathtaking. I could not put the book down. When I finished “The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer” I could not wait for the second book.

Now the second book continues right where the first book left off. Unfortunately, it gets boring so incredible fast. In the first 350 pages NOTHING is happening. Well, obviously there are words written on pages but there is no story. The main protagonists are doing something but it is of no worth. If someone had asked me what was happening, I would not have been able to answer the question because there was no storyline. You could sum the first 2/3 of the book down to this: Mara is home alone and angsting, or Mara is with her boyfriend and angsting or dreaming of hot sex with Noah. Yes, Mara, we got it. You find your boyfriend so sexy and you want hot, steamy sex with him but you are afraid you might hurt him.

While I could hardly put down the first book, I had trouble picking back up the second book. How disappointing is that? I admit, I had high expectations but this was a big letdown. The reason I gave this book a three star rating is only thanks to the last 150 pages. The last part of the book finally reminded me of the fantastic first book. There was suspense and action and finally something was happening. I wish the whole book had been like that. The first 350 pages should have been shortened so much.

Because of the last pages I am looking forward to the last book of the series, but I got burned. I am worried that it will be boring again. Admittedly, I looked up the page number of the last book in this series. I decided to read something else first. I am not sure I would have the patience to suffer through a boring first half again. I need some motivation. But I am in good hope that the last book might match the awesomeness of the first book.
